Reflexology

Reflexology is a holistic therapy with ancient roots and a modern theoretical background. There is evidence that forms of Reflexology have been practised in Ancient Egypt, China and India. In modern times, Reflexology was rediscovered and revitalised by Eunice Ingham in the USA. Her nephew Dwight Bwyers is still dedicated to promoting the art around the world today.

Reflexology aims to bring about positive changes in the body-mind systems through the application of controlled pressure to specific areas of the feet and hands. It is based on the concept that body maps are reflected on the hands and feet, which act as a microcosm of the whole person. By working on these areas, the Reflexologist can help to stimulate the body's innate healing response, thereby bringing about a state of relaxation and balance. It is an excellent therapy for general well-being and vitality and the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life.

Clinical Reflexology may be helpful for:-
  • Back pain
  • Migraine
  • Sub-fertility
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep disorders
  • Sports injuries
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Digestive disorders
  • Stress-related conditions
It has also been shown to reduce stress and absenteeism in the workplace. It is useful where other parts of the body are too painful to treat directly.

Is reflexology safe during pregnancy?

Apart from a few special cases, Reflexology is a safe, effective therapy during pregnancy. It may help with a number of conditions that sometimes occur during pregnancy, such as oedema or symphisis pubis dysfunction. It has also been suggested that it can shorten labour and help with hypertension.

Vertical Reflex Therapy

In addition to classical Reflexology I use Vertical Reflex Therapy, which is anecdotally especially helpful for hormonal problems and musculo-skeletal problems such as back pain, knee pain and arthritis. VRT is a five-minute treatment which can be used in its own right for treating large numbers of people, eg in the workplace or sports teams. Alternatively, it can be used as an adjunct to a classical Reflexology treatment.

Nerve Reflexology

I hold a qualification in Nerve Reflexology, a specialised branch of Reflexology which may be especially useful for chronic lumbar and pelvic pain, neck, shoulder and arm pain and migraine. Techniques can be used after surgery to release stiffness caused by scar tissue. Reflex points are used that can help to balance the body recover following chronic and acute stress.
